Stone School Regional Information
Overview
The region of Wyoming where the Stone School
is located is diverse as it is amazing. Within an hours
drive of the Stone School you can be at nearly 10,000
feet atop the Big Horn Mountains, exploring fossil rich
foothills, gazing across beautiful green patures and
ranchlands, or get lost in miles of high plains desert.
If you're looking
for a better quality of life, it's hard to beat South
Big Horn County. Nearly zero pollution, low crime, clean
water, little traffic, easy pace, room to roam and scenic
mountain views. Cost of living is well below the national
average, and there are no state income taxes and low
sales and property taxes. The community takes pride
in it's excellent public school system with arts, music
and sports.
Our proximity to vast
natural resources is the biggest draw to this area.
Whether you hunt with a camera or a gun, the abundant
wildlife on the Big Horn Mountains draw trophy seekers
from all over the world. Elk, moose, mule deer, antelope,
Big Horn sheep, mountain goats, mountain lions, black
bear, rabbits, ducks, geese and turkey are but a few
of our neighbors.
Numerous rivers, lakes,
creeks and streams provide memorable fishing experiences
for all skill levels. Miles of trails for hiking, cross-country
skiing, horseback riding, snowmobiling and ATVs assure
a scenic experience regardless of your preferred transport.
Downhill skiers and snowboarders have mutliple resorts
to choose from in the Big Horns, as well as excellent
ski destinations a day trip away in other parts of Wyoming,
Montana, South Dakota and Colorado.
World reknowned fossil
beds and geological formations bring students, scientists
and enthusiasts to lands just minutes from the Stone
School. It is not uncommon to still find arrowheads,
ammonites, geodes and other artifacts along frequently
traveled trails.
The lack of malls
and "big box" stores in Greybull or Shell
may be a shock to some, but friendly local retailers
with a hometown smile stock what you need at competitive
prices. Don't be put off by the rustic come on, though,
even the Stone School is wired for satellite TV and
high speed Internet. Everything you need, and nothing
you don't.
For those that need
the occasional fix of urban shopping, Cody has a couple
of national retail chain stores only an hour away. Two
hours or so North in Billings, MT you can find shopping
malls, most of the specialty shops you could ever need
and an international airport.
